Background

Before desktop publishing, when someone came to us with a sample typeface they wanted us to use, the identification of the font was usually straightforward. Most industry professionals had the mainstream fonts such as Helvetica, Times Roman, Optima, Palatino, Goudy, etc. and it was rare when we could not quickly and easily identify a font.

Our font suppliers were the manufacturers of the typesetting equipment we had purchased. We were limited by the fonts our equipment company supplied to us and by our budgets.

The cost of fonts was very high. A single variation of a font, such as Helvetica Light, was $135. An entire family of a major font could cost several thousand dollars.

Times have changed! With the advent of desktop publishing, more fonts are available than ever before, at an affordable price. It is truly an exciting time to be working with fonts and we are continually impressed with some of the innovative uses of type and graphics we see today. The ever-expanding list of new fonts is one of the most exciting things happening today in our industry.

The down side is that when we are attempting to identify a font for a client or just select one to use that we've seen, the incredible range of fonts available makes it increasingly difficult to locate a specific font. Our dilemma is real. Precious hours are lost attempting to identify the correct font, and IdentaFONT has finally solved this problem.
