How IdentaFONT Works

Finally, there is a way to easily identify fonts.

The first step to font identification is to select a single letter or character that stands out to you as being easily identifiable. The next step is to search for that character in type catalogs provided by font vendors. Because most font books are in alphabetical order and not categorized or prioritized in any way, except alphabetically, this usually takes a lot of time.

IdentaFONT helps you identify the font in four no-nonsense steps. All the organizing and categorizing has been done for you so that you can quickly and easily identify a font.

The fonts included in IdentaFONT have been separated into four books: Serif, Sans Serif, Script and Display. (In order to simplify the style categories, Slab Serif was placed in our Serif book; Graphic, Blackletter, and Ornamental fonts were placed in our Display book.)

Within each book, the fonts are separated again by the individual characters. For example, all the As are together. All the Bs are together. All the Cs are together, etc. This is the crux of IdentaFONT. To match up a letter or character, you don’t need to jump from one entire font family to another (seeing the whole alphabet at one time if you’re lucky) or scrunched together so small you can’t see the individual nuances of a single character.

The fonts that are on page A-1 are the same fonts, in the same position with the same reference number, found on pages B-1 and C-1, etc. This is the same for all the pages, i.e., page A-2, page B-2, page C-2 are also the same fonts and reference numbers in the same position (only a different page). All of the reference numbers shown above the letter or character can be found in the Font Listing (located in the front of the book) in numerical order with the font name. If you find a font on page A-3, M-3, or Z-3, it will be listed on “Page 3 Fonts.”

In the Serif book, Italic and Roman fonts are on separate rows. We have found this sub-categorization feature very helpful.
